"Today I desperately wanted to win gold,
but didn't at all reckon with such a time."
Background
Federica Pellegrini has always shown herself to be an immense talent in the world of swimming. At just fifteen years of age Pellegrini captured two silver medals at the 2003 European Junior Championships, in the 100m freestyle and as a member of Italy’s 4x100m medley. The following year at the Athens Olympics, Pellegrini took home the silver medal in the 200m freestyle.

Since capturing her first Olympic medal, Pellegrini has been capturing medals left and right at both the continental and global level. She won her first international gold medal in the 200m freestyle at the 2005 European Short Course Championships. The race was so tight that Pellegrini shared the gold medal with Sweden’s Josefin Lillhage as both were recorded in exactly the same time.

During the next two years, Pellegrini went on to win five more major medals at the European and World Championships, but none were gold. Pellegrini broke this streak in style, when she won the 2008 European Long Course Championship in the 400m freestyle in a new world record of 4 minutes, 1.53 seconds. She also took home silver and bronze medals as a member of Italy’s 4x100m and 4x200m medley teams.

Having captured her second gold medal in a world record mark, Pellegrini seems to be poised to strike for her third major gold medal (and her first Olympic title) this summer in Beijing.
